In Ontario, if your motorcycle is licensed for the road, you need to have, at a minimum, liability insurance to legally drive it on the road. We’re here to help you understand the different types of insurance available  to you and we’ll customize the coverage for your needs and protection.

What are my options?

Here’s what is typically covered under mandatory liability insurance in Ontario:

Provides extra coverage in cases of injury and damage to others and their property resulting from a vehicle accident.
Provides coverage for the physical damage to your motorcycle to the extent which you’re not at fault.
Provides coverage for medical costs and damage if an uninsured other driver is at fault.

Provides coverage for you and your family if you are injured or killed in an automobile accident.

In addition to the mandatory liability insurance, you can choose one of these following options for enhanced protection for your motorcycle. These options provide coverage for the physical damage or loss of your motorcycle:

Provides coverage for damage to your motorcycle caused by a car collision with another vehicle or object

Provides coverage for all other insured damage to your motorcycle (except collision or upset), such as fire, theft, vandalism.

This provides the broadest level of coverage and combines Collision or Upset and Comprehensive coverage along with increased theft protection

Yes, the “Accident Benefits” section of your motorcycle insurance, which forms part of your mandatory liability coverage in Ontario, will cover any passengers you have on your motorcycle with you if you get into an accident and they are injured or killed.
While the cost to insure an older motorcycle can vary, older bikes tend to be less powerful and not as fast, making them less risky. Therefore, your liability insurance is likely to be cheaper than it would be for a new bike.

Motorcycles premiums are heavily weighted in the summer riding season (similar to snowmobiles carrying their premiums over the winter months). Since insurers don’t expect you to ride through the winter months, they assign a lower value to your premiums when your motorcycle is likely to be sitting idle and a higher value when you use it the most. By cancelling at the end of the summer riding season, you could be left with little refund.
